During SpaceX’s Tuesday earnings call, Elon Musk said both SpaceX and Tesla have formed “special committees of independent directors” to explore a possible merger. He emphasized he cannot sit on those groups.
Musk noted that any deal would need a 50% vote of all Tesla shares, not just the shares that are cast, describing that threshold as “quite a high hurdle.” He said shareholders must ultimately decide.
Following the announcement, after-hours trading saw SpaceX shares rise about 6.6% and Tesla up roughly 1.6%. The market reaction reflects heightened investor interest in the merger chatter.
The move adds to a recent string of consolidations within Musk’s portfolio. In 2025, xAI acquired Musk’s social-media company, X (formerly Twitter), and in February, SpaceX acquired xAI.
This pattern mirrors earlier attempts to bring Musk’s enterprises under a single umbrella, suggesting he views combined operations as a way to streamline resources and accelerate development across his ventures.

Both firms have already collaborated on artificial-intelligence software, chip design, robotics, and satellite connectivity. SpaceX also provides launch services for Tesla’s hardware projects, while Tesla contributes manufacturing expertise to SpaceX initiatives.
On Thursday, Tesla showcased the long-awaited Roadster, featuring a version equipped with SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters. The demonstration included the car launching, hovering, and flipping in mid-air, highlighting the practical crossover of technologies.
Musk stated that the merger is not a certainty, saying, “I don’t think we should necessarily assume that a SpaceX and Tesla merger is a certainty,” he added.
As the situation develops, it is clear that Musk and his companies are exploring new ways to work together. They have formed committees to explore the possibility of a merger, and the market has reacted positively to the news.
