Nairobi Recruiter Thrives on Unconventional Remote Work Schedule - remote work
Jimmy Kibuswa, a 32-year-old healthcare recruiter in Nairobi, works a US-aligned shift starting at 4 p.m. local time.

Jimmy Kibuswa, a 32-year-old healthcare recruiter in Nairobi, Kenya, works an unconventional shift for a US company. His day starts at 4 p.m. local time, aligning with the American workday, and ends around midnight. When he began this job about three months ago, Kibuswa thoughtfully structured his day to include gym time, reading, and rest, ensuring his health and well-being despite the unusual hours.

Kibuswa’s routine allows him to prioritize health and personal time. He wakes at 8:30 a.m., enjoys breakfast, and reads self-help books before heading to the gym by 10:30 a.m. for a two-hour session. “The beauty of getting to the gym at 10:30 is that most people go early in the morning,” he explains. “So, by the time I arrive, it’s almost empty, and I’ve got the full attention of the coaches.” His workout includes a 30-minute walk on the treadmill followed by a 15-minute run. This consistent gym routine is a new habit he’s developed since starting this job, contrasting with his previous irregular attendance when working locally in Nairobi.

A structured routine for well-being

After his workout, Kibuswa walks about 2,000 steps home and prepares his main meal around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m., his one big meal of the day besides breakfast. During work hours, he snacks on nuts and drinks water. Between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., he focuses on career planning or relaxation. “I still consider myself early in my career, and I think, ‘Where do I want to be in the next five years or maybe the next 10 years?'” he reflects. This time also allows him to connect with family and friends, maintaining relationships despite his unique schedule.

Adapting to the unconventional

Initially, Kibuswa struggled with the shift, taking naps before work. “Nowadays, I don’t feel like I need those naps because I’ve adapted,” he says. His girlfriend works similar hours, so they spend weekends together, making the most of their shared free time.

Remote work is rare in Kenya, making Kibuswa’s situation unique. “It’s what so many people would wish to find,” he notes. He credits his schedule for improved focus and creativity. “I am sharper now because my mind is relaxed,” he explains, attributing it to better sleep, exercise, and downtime. This lifestyle prioritizes his health and personal growth, something he deeply values.

The impact of time management

Kibuswa’s schedule has reduced his stress. “Before this job, it was all about work,” he recalls. He’s surprised by the extra time he has compared to his previous job, which included a two-hour commute. This newfound time allows him to invest more in personal development, enhancing his quality of life.
