Tawanda Chiota, a senior business analyst in international transportation at Canadian Tire Corporation, earned his Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation in December 2025. The credential represents the culmination of a career built on direct experience in global trade, spanning academic study in China to advising Canadian exporters and overseeing logistics operations.

Chiota’s introduction to international commerce began during his undergraduate studies at Bohai University in China, where he completed a degree in international economics and trade. However, it was the daily immersion in a major trading hub—exposure to port operations, export-focused factories, and logistics networks—that transformed classroom learning into practical understanding. This hands-on experience shaped his perspective on trade beyond theoretical frameworks.

The practical lessons extended far beyond academic coursework. Mastering Mandarin, adjusting to cultural expectations, and managing cross-border business relationships provided early insight into how global trade operates outside of policy documents. These experiences would later guide his professional trajectory, steering him toward roles that connected academic knowledge with real-world application.

A key experience occurred during his internship with Sinotrans, China’s largest logistics provider. There, he handled export documentation, port logistics, and container movements, tasks that revealed the operational pressures within supply chains. Visits to ports such as Jinzhou and Qinhuangdao demonstrated how exporters, customs agents, and freight coordinators collaborate to transport goods across borders.

This internship also deepened his interest in the broader forces influencing trade. While his academic focus remained on economics, his practical work exposed him to the role of governments, trade agreements, and regulatory frameworks in shaping markets. The contrast between policy design and real-world implementation became a recurring theme in his career development.

From Academia to Real-World Trade Strategy

To explore these trends further, Chiota pursued a master’s degree in political science at Memorial University of Newfoundland, specializing in international trade relations. The program provided a structured understanding of how trade policies, political decisions, and economic systems interact. However, it was his subsequent consulting work that brought these concepts into sharp focus.

At White Rock International Business Consulting, he advised small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) preparing for global expansion, many of which were family-owned operations in rural and coastal regions. One project involved facilitating seafood exports to Qatar, where he conducted market research, regulatory assessments, and collaborated with trade commissioners. These engagements reinforced a key realization: effective trade depends equally on strategic planning and flawless execution.

The work also highlighted how public institutions reduce trade barriers. This understanding later influenced his approach to corporate supply chains and entrepreneurship.

Chiota’s next career move brought him to Container World, a logistics firm, where he managed freight operations and supply chain coordination. The role showed a fundamental truth: even the most well-designed trade agreements can fail without precise implementation. Errors in documentation, missed customs requirements, or coordination gaps could disrupt entire shipments.

Why the CITP Credential Matters Now

The CITP designation emerged as a logical progression, allowing him to formalize the varied experiences accumulated, from academic study to consulting, logistics, and policy engagement. For Chiota, the credential was not merely professional recognition but an opportunity to join a network of trade experts who could exchange knowledge across industries.

One such challenge is his current role at Canadian Tire Corporation, where he serves as a Senior Business Analyst in International Transportation. His responsibilities include managing trade regulations, compliance, logistics, and risk within the company’s global supply chain. The CITP designation has been instrumental in this position, offering a technical foundation to address complex trade operations confidently.

The credential has also positioned Chiota as a bridge between corporate trade functions and the needs of smaller businesses. At Canadian Tire, he analyzes how regulatory changes and geopolitical shifts impact the company’s global supply chain. The CITP’s focus on compliance and risk management directly aligns with his duties, where even minor errors in documentation or tariff classification can disrupt shipments worth millions.

Parallel to his corporate role, Chiota’s startup, Vancouver Seafood Exports, utilizes the CITP network to connect Canadian producers with international buyers. The venture targets smaller operations that lack the resources to handle export certifications, market research, or buyer relationships.
