Just For Pets has honored Australia’s top independent pet retailers during its 20th anniversary event in Melbourne. The awards ceremony at the RACV City Club recognized member businesses for performance, engagement, and community involvement.
PetCare Warehouse Caringbah from New South Wales was named Retailer of the Year. Operated by brothers George and James Galopoulos, the 40-year-old family business was selected by supplier partners for its retail performance, customer service, and supplier relationships.
The venue also recognized Uncle Tom’s Pet & Poultry in Nerang, Queensland, as Member of the Year. Owners James and Nicole Wood were cited for their participation in Just For Pets programs, collaboration with peers, and support for supplier partnerships.
ClawsnPaws Pet Supplies in Montrose, Victoria, received the Boehringer Ingelheim Retailing Excellence Award. Owner Rob Thompson was honored for his commitment to independent retailing following the store’s relocation from Kilsyth to Montrose last October.
While the awards celebrate specific achievements, the long-term viability of these independent shops relies on handling a market increasingly dominated by large chains. Without collective strategies, smaller operators may struggle to compete on pricing and marketing reach. Just For Pets attempts to bridge this gap by offering members collective buying power, marketing support, and business development programs.
Just For Pets group manager Janine Yeates noted that the winning businesses, despite their differences, share core qualities.
“PetCare Warehouse Caringbah, Uncle Tom’s Pet & Poultry, and ClawsnPaws Pet Supplies are very different businesses operating in different communities, but they share the qualities that make independent pet retailing so special,” Yeates said.

“They are family-owned and independently operated businesses whose owners are personally invested in their customers, their teams, their communities, and the future of the pet industry.”
Yeates added that the group provides tools to help independent retailers survive and thrive.
“Members receive access to a network of like-minded operators and support systems designed to help them manage the challenges of the modern marketplace,” Yeates stated.
The awards ceremony, which brought together Just For Pets members, supplier partners, and industry representatives, showcased excellence in retail performance, industry engagement, and community involvement. The event highlighted the importance of recognizing and rewarding outstanding independent pet retailers who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their customers, teams, and communities.
Established in 2007, Just For Pets has been supporting independent pet retailers through a range of initiatives, including collective buying power, marketing, education, networking, and business development programs. These programs are designed to help independent retailers compete effectively in a market dominated by large chains, and to provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
The recognition of PetCare Warehouse Caringbah as the leading independent retailer for Royal Canin and Eukanuba is a sign to the business’s strong relationships with suppliers and its commitment to providing high-quality products and services to its customers. Similarly, the award received by ClawsnPaws Pet Supplies acknowledges the business’s dedication to independent pet retailing and its ability to adapt and grow in a rapidly changing market.
The success of these independent pet retailers demonstrates the importance of personalized service, community involvement, and a deep understanding of the needs and preferences of pet owners. By recognizing and rewarding these outstanding businesses, Just For Pets aims to promote excellence in independent pet retailing and to support the long-term viability of these unique and valuable businesses.
